International Maritime Organization advances technical cooperation in maritime sector

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Technical Cooperation Committee (TC) held its session in London, with hybrid participation, from 8 to 12 June 2026.

The Committee considered technical cooperation related to global shipping, including reports on cooperation projects among Member States. The Committee also approved a resolution condemning attacks against merchant shipping and innocent seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz.

The work of the Technical Cooperation Committee will in future be more clearly driven by the needs of Member States, alongside thematic priorities such as the implementation of IMO instruments, national maritime policies and strategies, and maritime education and competence. Finland considers IMO's work to advance technical cooperation in the maritime sector, and to strengthen the capabilities of maritime professionals, to be highly important. Finland underscores the importance of high-quality maritime education and promotion of gender equality in Member States and across IMO technical cooperation activities. Both in Finland and the wider world, there is a pressing need for new seafarers who combine traditional maritime competence with a broad variety of new skills.

What's next?

The Technical Cooperation Committee will meet again in June 2027.
