On Valentine's Day, community members gathered to spread arborly love in the Hazelwood Neighborhood. With the help of over 60 volunteers, we planted 11 trees in Cherry Blossom Park. This increased the tree canopy coverage in the small neighborhood park by 40%.
City employees from Water, Environmental Services, and Transportation Bureaus also joined in on the fun. There were even special guest visits from Drippy the Water Drop, Seymour the Salmon, and Council President Jaime Dunphy.
We had a bounty of Valetine's-themed snacks and crafts for when planters needed a break. Educational materials about canopy coverage in Hazelwood were set out to educate community members about the canopy coverage in Hazelwood. Data was gathered from the Tree Inventory Map, the Street Tree Inventory Dashboard, the Portland Urban Forest Plan.
Kudos to Neighborhood Tree Steward, Lindsey Oldani, for her help in rallying park neighbors and City employees to celebrate with us. We are so grateful for her enthusiasm for trees and love for community. We had so much fun planting with everyone and hope these new trees provide shade and beauty for neighbors, for many years to come.
