Imagine asking your car a question and getting a precise answer from an AI assistant that has encyclopedic knowledge of every part, system, and component in your vehicle. That's the vision we shared last fall at GM Forward: a custom-built AI assistant, fine-tuned with proprietary vehicle data to help anticipate your every need, arriving later this year.
In the near term, we're upgrading GM vehicles with Google Gemini1, bringing an AI assistant to the road at an unmatched scale. Gemini will roll out soon to model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles with Google built-in. With approximately 4 million vehicles in the U.S. eligible for the update, this represents one of the largest deployments of Gemini in the industry.
"Gemini delivers AI assistance to millions of drivers across every segment and price point for a wide range of everyday needs. That kind of scale is only possible because of the connected vehicle foundation GM has built through OnStar over the past 30 years," said Tim Twerdahl, Global Vice President of Product Management, General Motors. "Later this year, GM will deliver a more deeply integrated AI experience shaped by OnStar intelligence."
Gemini is available with Google built-in2 through GM's infotainment system, drawing on the power of your vehicle's software platform and OnStar connectivity to deliver richer information. Customers will notice an upgrade from the current Google Assistant to a smarter, more intuitive AI assistant that continues to improve over time.
With Gemini, you can speak naturally without memorizing commands or repeating context. Ask for music that fits your mood, your scenery, or the length of your trip. Talk to Gemini about the skyline as you drive past it. You can debate big ideas, explore random curiosities, and even send texts translated in different languages - all while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
New things to try with Gemini in your GM vehicle
Gemini lets you use natural, back-and-forth conversation, instead of commands. It understands context, handles follow-up questions seamlessly, and keeps getting smarter over time.
Here are some new experiences that will make driving a GM vehicle more engaging at every turn:
1. Texts that don't get lost in translation - sent with the perfect emojis
Ask Gemini to summarize and read your incoming messages so you can respond with context and confidence. Gemini understands natural language, making it easy to draft, edit, or even translate your texts - all without touching your phone.
Express it with emojis: "Send a message to Anna to let her know that I'm bringing dessert and add a cupcake emoji to it."
2. Curated entertainment that meets the occasion
Heading on a road trip? It can create a playlist that matches the scenery. Stuck in the carpool line? It'll suggest a podcast episode that fits your remaining time. Parked and waiting? Stream a quick show. Gemini taps into your go-to in-vehicle apps3 - Amazon Music, Apple Music, Audible, HBO Max, Hulu, Prime Video, Spotify, TuneIn, YouTube, and more.
3. A conversation that keeps up
Your in-vehicle assistant can handle the tasks in a single conversation flow.
4. Learn and brainstorm
Sometimes the drive is the only quiet moment you get in a busy day. You can use that time to pick up something new, think through ideas, or rehearse for a meeting - just say, "Hey Google, let's talk."
5. Smarter route planning for commercial drivers
From landscapers and service technicians to long-haul operators, GM's commercial-vehicle drivers spend their days on the road, often managing multiple stops, tight schedules, and heavy equipment. Gemini helps take the stress out of planning, so drivers can focus on getting the job done.
Availability
Gemini will arrive soon in eligible model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles in the U.S. with Google Built-in. The update will be delivered over several months. When the upgrade is ready for your vehicle, you'll see a message on your infotainment screen. To use Gemini, make sure you're:
The Gemini update will expand to additional GM markets and support more languages over time.
Next time you get in your Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick or GMC with Google built-in, say "Hey Google" and try something new with Gemini. This is just the start of what your GM vehicle will be able to do with AI.
