Ohio Recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Month, Day

COLUMBUS, Ohio - June marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The Ohio Department of Aging (AGE) and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) are reminding Ohioans to help older adults by recognizing the signs of elder abuse and how to report it.

"Protecting older adults from elder abuse, fraud, exploitation, and scams is a responsibility we take seriously," said AGE Director Ursel J. McElroy. "To make Ohio the best place to age in the nation, we must empower people with the tools to recognize and report elder abuse. By staying informed and working together, we can ensure that every older Ohioan can age with confidence and safety."

Signs of elder abuse can include a lack of basic amenities, a worsening living environment, unexplained injuries, unusual behavior changes, unpaid bills, new credit cards, and increased cash withdrawals.

"Elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation are far too common, and far too often go unreported," said Matt Damschroder, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. "Every Ohioan has a role to play in protecting our seniors, whether that means learning the warning signs, checking in on a neighbor, or making a call to our Adult Protective Services hotline. Awareness saves lives, and in Ohio, help is always available."

To help Ohioans understand what elder abuse is, where it happens, and how to recognize it, ODJFS is continuing its Age Safely, Ohio campaign. AGE's elder abuse webpage, aging.ohio.gov/elderabuse, has detailed elder abuse warning signs and insights into how older Ohioans can avoid scams.

Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel are recognizing the importance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 with this proclamation.

Anyone can report elder abuse by calling 1-855-OHIO-APS (1-855-644-6277) or visiting aps.jfs.ohio.gov. Callers can review a checklist to provide appropriate information. Callers can also choose to remain anonymous.
