City of Colorado Springs' Public Works' officials announced the Galley Road Bridge replacement project's completion date has been moved to spring 2026.
The project has been delayed for several reasons. Sensitive fiber optic lines needed relocation. That process took a year instead of the original 3-4 months the City expected. The contractor tried to accelerate the construction timeline but ran into obstacles like the early summer flooding and unanticipated utilities that required relocation.
Because of this, Galley Road between East San Miguel Street and Moffat Circle is still closed. Drivers should follow detour signs using North Murray Boulevard and Wooten Road to get to Palmer Park Boulevard or East Platte Avenue. People can still reach nearby homes and businesses. Customers for ENT Credit Union, located at 4545 Galley Road, should approach from the west. Access for businesses located at 4575 Galley Road is from the east.
Another project nearby, the Galley Road and Wooten Road Culvert Rehabilitation, will start in early 2026. This work won't close the road completely. Crews will fix the top of a concrete culvert under the road, which was built in 1970 and is wearing out. This work is part of the City's bridge maintenance program and helps the structure last longer. It also makes room for sidewalks and safer pedestrian crossings.
"We certainly are sympathetic to travelers impacted by the Galley Road bridge replacement project," said Richard Mulledy, City of Colorado Springs Public Works Director. "This project hasn't gone as smoothly as we'd have liked due to factors outside our control." He added that City officials are planning the upcoming Galley and Wooten Culvert Rehabilitation Project to ensure minimal travel disruptions.
As for the Galley Road Bridge replacement project, officials ask people not to attempt to drive or walk through the area. This has been a problem throughout the project. Heavy equipment and trucks operate near the bridge, making the area unsafe for the public.
The Galley Road bridge over West Fork Sand Creek will be replaced with a new structure that better accommodates high-flow events in the creek, in addition to transportation needs above ground. The new bridge will be approximately 20 feet wider to provide two travel lanes in each direction, a center turn lane, an eight-foot sidewalk on the north side of the bridge, and a 10-foot sidewalk on the south side. A new pedestrian-activated signal will be installed at the Homestead Trail connection at the east end of the bridge.
