Strengthening Maritime Capabilities: Launch of the MDA Training Programme

On 9 February 2026, the Deputy Head of Mission of EUCAP Somalia officially inaugurated the first seminar of a year-long Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) training programme delivered by EUCAP Somalia's Field Office Puntland for 18 PMPF officers. The event marked the launch of a comprehensive capacity-building initiative aimed at strengthening maritime security knowledge and operational effectiveness within the PMPF.

The 15-day seminar focused on developing participants' foundational maritime knowledge and practical skills. The training programme covered essential aspects of navigation and chart reading, including chart interpretation, navigational symbols, positioning techniques, compass use, distance and depth measurement, course plotting, and key navigational calculations. These core competencies are designed to enhance officers' ability to operate safely and effectively in maritime environments.

In addition to navigation, participants received instruction in basic seamanship. Sessions introduced vessel orientation, main boat components, onboard layout, and fundamental maritime terminology, ensuring officers gained a clear understanding of vessel structure and operations.

Safety at Sea formed another critical component of the seminar. Officers were trained in the correct use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE), including lifejackets and buoyancy aids. The programme also addressed procedures to follow in water-related emergencies, reinforcing best practices to safeguard personnel during maritime operations.

The seminar concluded on 25 February 2026, marking an important milestone in enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness within PMPF staff. It also laid a strong foundation for the continuation of the year-long training programme, further strengthening the operational capabilities of the force in the months ahead.
