USDA Rural Development Investment Brings Water Treatment Facility Upgrades for Town of Cheraw and Surrounding Communities

USDA Rural Development State Director for Colorado Sallie Clark announced the Town of Cheraw has been awarded a $7,270,000 loan and grant combination to improve their water treatment facility and expand support for nearby water systems. The funding is being provided through the Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants Program.

"USDA Rural Development is committed to investing in the long-term health and resilience of rural communities. By upgrading the town's treatment facility and supporting surrounding systems, we are helping to deliver clean dependable water to the people who rely on it every day," said Clark.

The project will upgrade the town's existing treatment infrastructure, including the installation of advanced filtration technology to remove contaminants and other natural occurring elements. Once construction is completed, the facility will have the capacity to provide safe, clean drinking water for four nearby community water associations: Beehive Water, Southside Water, East End Water and Holbrook Water.

Previously, the town was awarded a $30,000 Special Evaluation Assistance for Rural Communities and Households (SEARCH) Grant from USDA to assist with initial work on the project to fund their Preliminary Engineering Report and Environmental Review for retrofitting the existing plant with better filtration. The SEARCH program helps very small, financially distressed rural communities with predevelopment feasibility studies, design and technical assistance on proposed water and waste disposal projects.

USDA Rural Development invests in rural America with programs to promote rural prosperity. These programs expand access to high-speed internet, electricity, and infrastructure, and support economic growth, healthcare, education, housing and other community essentials.
