European Commission provides additional EUR 3 billion to support migration and asylum management

The European Commission has announced an additional EUR 3 billion in funding to support the implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, as well as to host refugees from Ukraine. This funding will provide further assistance to EU countries in managing migration and asylum in a transparent and orderly way.

President von der Leyen announced this extra support in her statement during a press conference with new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The additional funding will come from two sources: a revision of the current Multiannual Financial Framework (EUR 1.8 billion) and a top-up to the Asylum, Migrationand Integration Fundand Border Management and Visa Instrument(EUR 1.2 billion). It comes in addition to almost EUR 11 billion already allocated for migration and border management for the period of 2025-2027, and of the EUR 450 million allocated to EU countries hosting beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine since 2022.

EU Member States will be able to utilise this additional financial support until the end of 2027 to implement the Pact and provide assistance to those fleeing the war in Ukraine. Each country will receive a specific allocation based on established eligibility criteria. To access this funding, Member States will need to amend their existing national programmes by the end of 2025. The Commission is providing support to Member States to facilitate this process.
