Joint News Release with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization

Under the GENIAC (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge) project, which aims to strengthen Japan's generative AI development capabilities and its social implementation, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) will support R&D on establishing data ecosystems (grant program).

1. Background

As digitalization advances across economic and industrial activities, data has become a critical resource underpinning productivity improvement and innovation. Going forward, the use of real data held by companies and organizations will become even more important.

2. Overview of GENIAC

To foster domestic capabilities for generative AI development and encourage its social implementation at the fastest possible pace, METI and NEDO have been implementing the GENIAC project since February 2024, including providing computing resources required for foundation model development and hosting a related community.

3. Selected themes

From March 25 through April 23, 2026, NEDO conducted the following public call for proposals and announced the selected projects. For details of the selected themes and the implementing organizations, please refer to the link below.

Research and development related to establishing data ecosystems (grant program)

  • Research and Development Project of the Enhanced Infrastructures for Post-5G Information and Communication Systems: Development of post-5G information and communication systems (grant program)
    In collaboration with data holders, AI developers, and other stakeholders, the project supports the development and demonstration of a mechanism for appropriately consolidating and using data held across multiple companies and organizations, including initiatives to harness existing in-house data and to build and expand new data.

Project period: Up to two years within FY2026-FY2028
