ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL: SUBURBAN MAN SENTENCED FOR DRUG-INDUCED HOMICIDE IN FENTANYL DEATH

ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL: SUBURBAN MAN SENTENCED FOR DRUG-INDUCED HOMICIDE IN FENTANYL DEATH

March 30, 2026

Chicago - Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced a suburban man was sentenced to prison for his role in the December 2022 drug-induced homicide of Joshua Burks, 20, from Lake Barrington, Illinois.
In April 2025, a Lake County jury found Luke Napolitano, 23, guilty in the death of Joshua Burks. Today, Lake County Circuit Court Judge D. Christopher Lombardo sentenced Napolitano to 12 years in prison for one count of drug-induced homicide. Napolitano's sentence will be served consecutively to a 10-year sentence he received in a separate case where he was convicted of selling fentanyl to an undercover officer with the Illinois State Police.

"While this sentence in no way makes up for the loss felt by the family of Joshua Burks, it is my hope that it provides some healing and relief," Raoul said. "Fentanyl-laced drugs have devastated Illinois families and communities, and I will continue to use my authority to hold individuals accountable for distributing fentanyl-laced drugs."

According to Raoul, Napolitano sold Burks drugs laced with fentanyl that caused his death in December of 2022. During their investigation, officials with the Lake County Sheriff's Office determined Napolitano was also selling drugs in Cook and DuPage counties.

Raoul's Statewide Grand Jury Bureau is authorized by Illinois statute to prosecute multi-county cases involving drugs, money laundering, guns or electronics. Working regularly with state and federal counterparts, the bureau focuses on complex, often large-scale, organized criminal activity.

Assistant Attorneys General Steven Knight and Andrew Whitfield prosecuted the case for Raoul's Statewide Grand Jury Bureau.
