The Town Manager serves as the bridge between the vision of the Town Council and the daily work of the organization. This role transforms priorities into action and helps ensure that the values guiding Gilbert today continue to shape the community for generations to come.
Choosing a Town Manager is one of the most important responsibilities entrusted to elected officials. It requires looking beyond résumés and interviews to answer a much larger question: Who is best equipped to protect what makes Gilbert special while leading the community into the future?
That question carried extraordinary weight. Gilbert stands at a defining moment in its history. The rapid-growth years that shaped much of the community are giving way to a new era focused on reinvestment, redevelopment, and long-term stewardship. The choices made today will influence the community that future generations inherit.
Throughout a comprehensive national search, the Council remained focused on finding a leader with the experience, judgment, and character to guide Gilbert through this transition. The Council found that leader in Mario.
Mayor Scott Anderson said Mario distinguished himself through both his professional credentials and his leadership style.
"Mario brings exactly what Gilbert needs: steady hands, a sharp mind, and genuine care for the people he leads," Anderson said. "His deliberate, thoughtful approach stood out throughout this process and I'm confident Mario will be an exceptional Town Manager."
Councilmember Monte Lyons said the Council approached the selection with a clear understanding of its long-term significance.
"Of all the decisions that have faced this current Council, no decision has carried more weight than the hiring of a new Town Manager," Lyons said. "It will reverberate for years to come."
Mario currently serves as Gilbert's Assistant Town Manager, overseeing Finance and Management Services, the Office of Management and Budget, the People Team, and Parks and Recreation. Before joining Gilbert, he spent 27 years with the City of Phoenix, most recently as Deputy City Manager, and served seven years on active duty in the United States Air Force.
While experience mattered, Council members also focused on finding a leader who understands Gilbert's culture and values. Councilmember Jim Torgeson described the selection as "a very purposeful and intentional move."
"He shares the values that have been historically Gilbert and an ability to listen that is rare," Torgeson said. "He will keep Gilbert, Gilbert."
Councilmember Bobbi Buchli pointed to Mario's experience, professionalism, and genuine care for both residents and employees as qualities that distinguished him throughout the selection process.
"Mario brings a calm, thoughtful leadership style that I believe will serve Gilbert incredibly well during this important time in our community's history," Buchli said.
Vice Mayor Chuck Bongiovanni noted that Mario has already demonstrated the steady leadership qualities needed to guide the organization forward.
"Mario has been a solid and trusted Assistant Town Manager," Bongiovanni said. "His even-keel personality is rare these days in government, and I look forward to moving Gilbert forward with him."
Councilmember Yung Koprowski believes Mario brings "the right mix of experience, leadership, and approachability" and will help ensure Gilbert continues to grow in a way that is strategic, fiscally responsible, and centered on residents. Councilmember Kenny Buckland added that Mario's leadership and government experience will help maintain Gilbert's strong One Team culture while bringing new efficiencies and service improvements as the community approaches buildout.
The opportunity is both professional and deeply personal for Mario.
"Nine months ago, I was attracted to Gilbert by its reputation as a well-run and well-managed organization," he said. "The more I learned about the community, the more it appealed to me, and I have loved every minute of being here."
Mario said his goal is to provide stability and continuity while introducing new ideas and innovation as Gilbert continues to evolve. He officially assumed the role of Town Manager on June 1.
The Town Council also extends its sincere appreciation to Dawn Prince for her steady leadership during this transition.
Gilbert's story has long been defined by thoughtful leadership, long-term vision, and a commitment to preserving the qualities that make this community extraordinary. The Council is confident that Mario is the right leader to guide Gilbert into the future and build upon the strong foundation that has made Gilbert the community it is today.
