Gilbert Employee Brings Adaptive Sports Lessons Home from Kazakhstan

Gilbert, Ariz. - After traveling to Kazakhstan to learn how communities around the world are creating opportunities through adaptive sports, Gilbert Parks and Recreation employee Taryn Cantrell is bringing those lessons home to the soccer field.

Cantrell, an Adaptive Recreation Coordinator with Gilbert Parks and Recreation, was selected to participate in the ISPI Adaptive Sports Program in Kazakhstan, an international exchange focused on adaptive and unified sports. During the experience, participants learned about adaptive sports programs and facilities, explored different approaches to creating inclusive environments, and exchanged ideas with sports professionals and community leaders.

Now, Cantrell is putting those lessons into action with Gilbert's Kickoff for Inclusion: Adaptive Soccer Camp, a new program designed to bring athletes of all abilities together on the soccer field.

"Being in Kazakhstan gave me an incredible opportunity to learn from people who are advancing inclusion in sports," said Taryn Cantrell, Adaptive Recreation Coordinator with Gilbert Parks and Recreation. "Soccer is such an integral part of so many cultures around the world. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to bring athletes of all abilities together through this incredible sport."

The inaugural camp will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 10:00 AM to noon at the Cactus Yards Indoor Field House. The camp welcomes athletes ages 8 and older, with and without disabilities, creating an opportunity to build connections together in an inclusive environment.

Participants will team up with players from the ASU Men's Soccer Club for activities focused on teamwork, confidence, and, most importantly, having fun. Whether they are new to soccer or have been playing for years, every athlete will have the opportunity to participate and be part of the team.

Every registered athlete will also receive an official "Gilbert's Kickoff for Inclusion" camp t-shirt to commemorate the event.
