Rep. McClain Delaney Votes to Condemn Political Violence

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (D-MD) released a statement supporting a resolution to condemn political violence and the murder of Charlie Kirk:

"Today, I will vote for a resolution condemning the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the rise of political violence that threatens us all. There is never justification for murder, and no place for political violence in America. I offer my deepest, heartfelt condolences to the Kirk family.

More specifically, rage-fueled intolerance and algorithm-driven platforms threaten us all as Americans. My heart is still breaking for the family of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were assassinated in their home earlier this summer, and I grieve the shootings of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Our national tone must immediately change. My husband John and I often say that 'tone starts at the top'-whether it's the CEO of a company, the head of a nonprofit or educational institution or our national elected leaders. I commend Governor Cox of Utah for his wise and empathetic comments this week and for his year-long work with our Governor Wes Moore, on 'disagreeing better' and promoting civil dialogue. As Members of Congress, we should take a page from their prudent and thoughtful leadership at this electrified time and remember that our behavior-and our outbursts-are being tracked not only nationally but globally.

Finally, it is impossible to truly love America without loving your fellow Americans. I have long subscribed to the notion that I would not want to live in a country where everyone looked like me, thought like me, or worshipped like me-because that is not America. Our diversity is our strength and underpins our national identity. In dark moments like these, we must stand not as Republicans or Democrats, but as Americans-choosing unity over violence and defending the promise of America in every community we serve."
