President Karis: Ukraine is an inseparable part of Europe

At a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko in Kadriorg today, President Alar Karis stated that both Ukraine and the European Union must take credible steps to achieve Ukraine's full membership.

"Estonia supports the opening of all EU negotiating clusters with Ukraine as soon as possible, this summer if possible. At the same time, we expect that the reforms necessary to implement the principles of the first cluster of the rule of law will continue," said President Karis.

"The security guarantees of Ukraine must be credible, covered by troops and capabilities, and legally binding. Alongside the European Union, the prospect of NATO membership is undoubtedly the most lasting and strongest security guarantee for both Ukraine and Europe," said the head of state.

"Applying pressure on Russia jointly, including in international organisations, must continue because Russia's strategic objectives have not changed. A more effective result will undoubtedly come from sanctions imposed on Russian energy carriers and their transport," President Karis said.

"Estonia will continue to contribute to the search for solutions to the problem of deported Ukrainian children, both within the international coalition, bilaterally and in international organisations. We'll also continue to work in the Council of the Europe to launch the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine and the Claims Commission as soon as possible," said the head of state.

President Karis expressed his deep condolences to the families of those killed and injured in Russian drone and missile attacks. Tonight's attack targeted Ukrainian cities, residential areas and energy infrastructure, particularly in Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv.
