The European Union expresses its sadness at the death of Brooklyn Rivera, a respected Miskitu indigenous leader and former legislator, who had been detained since September 2023. We extend our condolences to his family, his community, and all those who worked alongside him.
The EU notes with concern the circumstances surrounding Mr. Rivera's death while in custody, particularly given reports of prolonged detention without contact with his family. We request the authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the events leading to his passing.
The EU reiterates its call for the release of all those detained for political reasons. We continue to stand in solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and reaffirm our support for democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law, including the vital role of civil society in upholding these values.
