A viewing and conversation on "Rovina's Choice"

You are cordially invited to join Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, for a viewing of the Oscar short-listed short documentary film "Rovina's Choice," a harrowing account of a mother's efforts to save her daughter from sickness and starvation in the wake of the Trump administration's dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Following the viewing, a panel will examine the devastating impacts of the administration's cuts to foreign aid on vulnerable communities around the world, the implications of those cuts on Americans' security, and where the United States goes from here.

Opening Remarks:

  • Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee
  • A Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

Panelists:

  • Representative Gabe Amo, Vice Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee
  • Dr. Atul Gawande, Executive Producer of "Rovina's Choice" and former Assistant Administrator for Global Health at USAID
  • Annie Wong, Co-Director of "Rovina's Choice"

Moderated by Jane Mayer, Staff Writer at The New Yorker

About the Film:

Through the story of one woman trying to save her daughter from starvation, "Rovina's Choice" traces the effects of Donald Trump's executive order suspending U.S. foreign aid-made within hours of being sworn into office in January 2025. Rovina Naboi's devastating story represents the global impact of that decision on the world's most vulnerable populations, and how it stopped decades of progress combating severe malnutrition and infectious disease.
