Iowa Insurance Division Recovers Over $3 Million in Stolen Cryptocurrency in Major Senior Financial Exploitation Case

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Insurance Division has recovered more than $3 million in stolen cryptocurrency belonging to an older Iowan, concluding a complex financial exploitation case that began in December 2025.

The scam was reported by a securities broker-dealer to the Insurance Division's Financial Exploitation Unit and the Division's Fraud Bureau was able to take action. Cryptocurrency scams targeting older adults are notoriously difficult to resolve because criminals quickly move stolen funds through offshore exchanges and complicated digital networks. In this case, rapid interagency action and specialized blockchain tracing allowed investigators to locate and secure the assets before they could be permanently cashed out.

"Financial exploitation scams have become increasingly digital, borderless, and aggressive," said Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen. "No single agency can tackle these crypto operations alone. The success of this case is a testament to the seamless coordination between our Fraud Bureau and the Ankeny Police, the FBI, the Polk County Attorney's Office, and private blockchain specialists. But we also want to commend the financial professionals who blow the whistle on scammers and give us and the victims a fighting chance to ensure Iowans' life savings aren't lost."

The Iowa Insurance Division's Fraud Bureau acknowledges the following agencies for their cooperation and swift action:

  • Ankeny Police Department
  • Polk County Attorney's Office
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Virtual Assets Unit
  • Operation Shamrock
  • Jesse Gossman, The Block Audit LLC

Protecting Yourself Against Fraud

The Fraud Bureau urges older Iowans, their families, and financial professionals to watch for common warning signs of scams:

  • Unsolicited investment opportunities promising high, guaranteed returns.
  • Urgent demands to convert savings into cryptocurrency.
  • Instructions to withdraw cash to deposit into digital cryptocurrency ATMs or kiosks.

If you, a client, or a loved one believe a scam is underway, report it to the Iowa Insurance Division Fraud Bureau at (515) 654-6464 or online at IowaFraudFighters.gov.

Early reporting is the single most critical factor in fighting back. It drastically increases the likelihood that investigators can interrupt fraudulent transactions, freeze illegal transfers, preserve vital evidence, and potentially recover stolen funds.
