Al Hassan case: ICC Trial Chamber X to deliver reparations order on 28 April 2026 – Practical Information

On Tuesday, 28 April 2026 at 11:00 (The Hague local time), Trial Chamber X of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will deliver its reparations order for victims in the case of The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud during a public hearing held in Courtroom I.

A summary of the decision will be read out by Trial Chamber X composed of Judge Kimberly Prost (Presiding), Judge Socorro Flores Liera, and Judge Keebong Paek, in the presence of Mr Al Hassan, his defence team, the Legal Representatives of Victims, and the Office of the Public Counsel for Victims. Representatives of the Republic of Mali, the Trust Fund for Victims, the Registry and the Office of the Prosecutor are also invited to attend this hearing.

At the ICC, victims can seek reparation for the harm they have suffered. At the end of a trial, if there is a conviction, the Trial Chamber may order a convicted person to pay reparations to the victims of the crimes of which they were found guilty. The Court may order such reparations to be paid through the Trust Fund for Victims. The Court may award reparations on an individual and/or collective basis, whichever is, in its view, the most appropriate for the victims in the particular case.

Order Scheduling the Delivery of a Reparations Order

Background: On 26 June 2024, Trial Chamber X, by majority, convicted Mr Al Hassan of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed between 2 April 2012 and 29 January 2013 in Timbuktu, northern Mali, controlled at that time by the armed groups Ansar Dine and Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb. On 20 November 2024, Trial Chamber X sentenced Mr Al Hassan to 10 years of imprisonment.

On 17 December 2024, the Defence and the Prosecution discontinued their appeals against the guilty verdict. The verdict and the sentence in this case are therefore final. On 10 December 2024, Trial Chamber X issued an Order for Submissions on Reparations, giving instructions and deadlines to the Prosecution, the Legal Representatives of Victims, the Defence, the Registry, the Trust Fund for Victims and the Republic of Mali for various submissions on reparations to victims. In June 2025, the parties and participants filed their submissions on reparations. On 16 July 2025, the parties filed their responses to the submissions on reparations. On 17 September 2025, the Chamber held a hearing on reparations.

The number of visitors in the public gallery is limited. Individuals who have not received a confirmation in advance of the hearing will not be granted access to the building. Those attending are advised to arrive 20 minutes in advance before the hearing starts.
