Washington County to Participate in Statewide STOP-DWI 420 Drug Day

Washington County STOP-DWI Coordinator Undersheriff John Winchell announced that law enforcement agencies and STOP-DWI coordinators across the state have joined forces to bring awareness to the public about the dangers of impaired driving.

In a combined effort to prevent injuries and save lives, these partners will take part in the state's STOP-DWI 420 Drug Day "High Visibility Engagement Campaign," which runs from Friday, April 18 through Sunday, April 20.

April 20, also known as 420, is a day when marijuana users sometimes increase their use. As marijuana can impair cognitive performance and slow reaction times, operating a motor vehicle after using it poses a threat to the driver and other people on the roads. So, if you plan to consume cannabis, please designate a sober driver who won't be - or utilize public transportation or a ride-sharing service.

Using any drug - including some prescription medications - can impair a driver's ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

"High Visibility Engagement Campaigns" are some of the many initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee to reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving. Statewide campaigns target the Super Bowl, St. Patrick's Day, 100 Days of Summer, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and the winter holiday season.

Everyone can help to make a difference by having a sober plan," said Hall. "Simply download the "Have a Plan" mobile app (www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp) and you will always be able to find a safe ride home.

Impaired driving is completely preventable, all it takes is a little planning.
