Tonight, Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Trump loyalist Jack Ciattarelli, ensuring the governor's mansion remains in Democrats' hands. This is the first time in 60 years that either party has been elected to control the governor's mansion for three consecutive terms.
New Jersey voters put their faith in Governor-elect Sherrill because they know she'll put New Jersey first. Starting on Day One, she will make New Jersey more affordable, including declaring a state of emergency to stop utility cost hikes.
Sherrill's victory is also a clear rejection of Donald Trump and Republicans' disastrous, billionaire-first agenda that is raising costs and cutting health care coverage for New Jerseyans across the state.
DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"We have a message for Donald Trump. You can remodel your marble bathrooms. You can build your gaudy ballrooms. You can party the night away at Mar-a-Lago as people struggle to get by. But the people of New Jersey, they want leadership, and the people of New Jersey, they chose Mikie Sherrill. Governor-elect Sherrill ran a remarkable campaign fiercely focused on lowering costs for working families and creating jobs. She ran a campaign centered on New Jersey values, American values, and the values of the Democratic Party. And tonight, Donald Trump and Jack Ciattarelli learned the hard way that there are consequences for betraying working families. Governor-elect Sherrill's victory, along with Abigail Spanberger's victory earlier tonight in Virginia, is the beginning of our Democratic resurgence. The American people are sick of Republicans putting the elites first, tired of Trump ignoring the tens of millions of families that bust their asses every day just to get by, and they're sick and tired of watching the GOP turn our beloved country into a playground for billionaires. Tonight isn't only a warning sign to Republicans, it's an affirmation of the vision that Democrats have presented to voters in New Jersey and across the country."
Heading into tonight, Democrats had won or overperformed in 46 out of 47 key elections this year. Democrats will enter 2026 with strong momentum heading into the midterms, as the DNC continues to invest in organizing and building power across the country.
