JOHNSTON CITY - The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that the new Stiritz Road bridge over Interstate 57 near Johnston City in Williamson County has reopened to traffic.
The $4.95 million project began in September 2025 and included replacing the previous bridge, which was demolished in October, as well as improvements to the road approaches, pavement, shoulders and guardrail.
The reopening ends a nearly yearlong closure of Stiritz Road between Dublin Road and Illinois 37.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
