The latest federal budget proposal by House Republicans threatens the health and economic security of millions of New Yorkers, imposing drastic cuts that would dismantle critical programs providing affordable care. If enacted, this budget would strip Medicaid and Essential Plan coverage from 1.2 million New Yorkers, leaving families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities vulnerable to loss of care.
Beyond reducing access, the proposal introduces bureaucratic hurdles-including work requirements and bi-annual renewals-that result in wrongful terminations, denied coverage, and delays in obtaining essential medical services.
For low-wage workers, the financial burden of increased cost-sharing would put routine and emergency care out of reach. Meanwhile, premium costs for those purchasing coverage on their own would surge, increasing by as much as $300 per month for a family.
The drastic cut in federal funding would also cause our state's vibrant health care economy to lose $11 billion annually, jeopardizing hospitals, providers, and the broader health care economy that sustains communities across the state.
These cuts, designed to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, would devastate working families and marginalized communities, deepening inequities and pushing countless individuals into crisis.
The Community Service Society strongly opposes this reckless proposal and urges lawmakers to reject any attempt to weaken Medicaid, the Essential Plan, and the Marketplace. Health care is a fundamental right, and we must protect the programs that ensure all New Yorkers have access to the care they deserve.
