Rep. Sykes Presents $1 Million Ceremonial Check for Peninsula Sanitary Sewer Project

AKRON, OHIO - Today, U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) presented a $1.092 million ceremonial check to Summit County for the Peninsula Sanitary Sewer Collection and Treatment Facilities Project.

"This project is an important investment in the long-term health, sustainability, and economy of the Peninsula community and the surrounding region," said Rep. Sykes. "By developing modern sanitary sewer collection and treatment facilities, we are helping protect the Cuyahoga River, preserve the natural beauty of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and support the local businesses and tourism that are so important to the area's economy. I was proud to secure this federal funding to help move this long-awaited project forward and will continue working to deliver resources that strengthen our infrastructure, protect our environment, and improve quality of life for communities across Ohio's 13th Congressional District."

"This federal investment in critical sewer infrastructure will have lasting benefits to Peninsula, Summit County, and the Cuyahoga River. We are grateful to Congresswoman Sykes for recognizing the importance of this permanent solution and the positive environmental and economic impact it will have on one of Summit County's most cherished natural treasures," said Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro.

"I thank Congresswoman Emilia Sykes for her continued support of the Village of Peninsula and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Without this project, harmful discharges will continue to pose serious environmental and health concerns for residents and visitors alike. As the gateway to Cuyahoga Valley National Park this discharge would likely cause residential hardship and force some businesses to close," said Peninsula Mayor Daniel Schneider.

The project will enable the Summit County Department of Sanitary Sewer Services to develop much-needed sanitary sewer collection and treatment facilities in the Village of Peninsula. Since 2021, the county and village have been working to design and implement this critical system. These funds will help the county and village in making their hard work a reality, providing the infrastructure necessary for the health of the Cuyahoga River and the continued vibrancy of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This project will reduce harmful pollution and support the continued operation of local businesses and tourism.

The $1.092 million for the Peninsula Sanitary Sewer Collection and Treatment Facilities Project is one of 15 Community Funding Projects totaling more than $12 million Rep. Sykes secured in the Fiscal Year 2026 federal budget. The other projects included in this funding can be found here.
