Minor to Moderate Coastal Flooding Expected in Annapolis Friday to Monday

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 20, 2024) - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for Annapolis (through Saturday at 6 p.m.) and a Coastal Flood Watch through Sunday at 1 a.m. The system will bring unusually high tides and strong winds, but is not anticipated to be accompanied by rain. Higher than normal tides may bring coastal inundations to low-lying areas, including (but not limited to) Annapolis City Dock and areas in Eastport. Please begin your flood preparations now.

The NWS flood forecast at City Dock between Friday, September 20 and Monday, September 23:

  • Friday at 7: 14 a.m. flooding to 3 feet above normal

  • Friday at 8:08 p.m. flooding to 3.2 feet above normal

  • Saturday at 7:57 a.m. flooding to 3.1 feet above normal

  • Saturday at 9:05 p.m. flooding to 3.7 feet above normal

  • Sunday at 8:42 a.m. flooding to 3.2 feet above normal

  • Sunday at 10:03 p.m. flooding to3.6 feet above normal

  • Monday at 9:31 a.m. flooding to 3.1 feet above normal

Expect downtown flooding to disrupt traffic and parking, especially on Dock Street.

SANDBAGGING AT CITY DOCK: The Annapolis Public Works Department (DPW) is preparing for this weather event by setting up sandbag operations on Dock Street (behind the Annapolis Harbormaster's office). The operation will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.

BOATING: The Annapolis Harbormaster has asked boat owners to check in on their boats after each high tide. As the water recedes, docked boats may shift to floating above the pier or lift. As water levels return to normal, boats may become lodged on fixed structures or atop other boats. This can result in a vessel taking on water or sinking. Please check boats to prevent fuel leaks and property damage. In addition, boats should move off anchor to a mooring ball where possible. Boat owners are responsible for vessels that drag anchor and damage other boats or property.

TURN AROUND DON'T DROWN:Inundation of waters can happen throughout the City, not just in downtown. Please follow any Annapolis Police directives and turn around at road closures. Do not drive through standing water. Do not park in closed parking lots. As a reminder, it only takes a few inches of water to turn a car into a boat (one without a motor or steering). Take the advice the National Weather Service offers: "Turn Around. Don't Drown!"

Emergency Operations Center (EOC): The Annapolis Emergency Operations Center is activated to an Enhanced level to coordinate preparedness activities and to support any response or recovery efforts for this weather event.
