BISMARCK, N.D. - Madison Milbrath, education outreach supervisor and North Dakota National History Day coordinator with the State Historical Society of North Dakota, has been selected as one of 18 coordinators nationwide to participate in a National History Day professional development cohort sponsored by the Library of Congress.
This fall 2025 program, "Using the Resources of the Library of Congress to Develop a Historical Argument," is designed to deepen coordinators' understanding of historical argumentation and provide strategies to support educators and students across the country. The exclusive section for National History Day coordinators launched this month and runs through mid-December.
"National History Day's local and affiliate program coordinators are the backbone of the NHD program," said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. "Coordinators work tirelessly year-round to deliver quality programming to students and teachers, and this program, generously sponsored by the Library of Congress, will only strengthen the quality of that programming."
Milbrath has coordinated North Dakota National History Day since 2023, expanding the program that encourages middle and high school students to research, interpret, and present projects on historical topics related to an annual theme. Through her work at the State Historical Society, she supports teachers and students across North Dakota in exploring history with rigor, creativity, and critical thinking.
"I am honored to represent North Dakota in this cohort," said Milbrath. "This opportunity will not only strengthen my own historical thinking skills but also help me provide new strategies for the educators and students in our state."
National History Day, a nonprofit education organization, engages more than half a million students globally each year. In North Dakota, the program is coordinated by the State Historical Society of North Dakota, with students competing in regional and state contests for the chance to advance to the national competition in College Park, Maryland.
