APCIA Commends Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner; Highlights the State’s Competitive Homeowners Insurance Market and Need for Legal Reform

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) today issued the following statement, attributed to Walter Gonzales, assistant vice president of state government relations at APCIA, on Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready's announcement that a public hearing will be held in September 2026 regarding the status of the state's homeowners insurance market.

"APCIA thanks Commissioner Mulready for his work during the 2026 Legislative Session on Oklahoma's homeowners insurance market. The industry looks forward to participating in the commissioner's public hearing in September on the status of the state's homeowners insurance market.

"We agree with the commissioner that Oklahoma's homeowners insurance market is competitive. Unlike in some other states, Oklahomans are not facing an availability crisis and have many options to find coverage that fits their needs and budgets. At the same time, we recognize that Oklahoma homeowners have faced higher insurance costs in recent years because of more severe weather, rising rebuilding costs, increased development in high-risk areas, and legal system abuse. The insurance industry is committed to working with the Oklahoma Department of Insurance (DOI) and lawmakers on solutions that can help lower insurance costs, particularly through mitigation and resiliency efforts such as the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Grant Program.

"As the commissioner noted, legal system abuse affects insurance affordability for hardworking Oklahomans. States such as Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana have enacted reforms to address this issue and are now seeing lower rates and greater market stability. We will continue working with the Oklahoma DOI in the 2027 Legislative Session to advance reforms that strengthen consumer protections and improve insurance affordability."
