Vivek Sujan, a distinguished R&D scientist in the Applied Research for Mobility Systems group at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been named a 2024 National Academy of Inventors, or NAI, Fellow.
The NAI promotes inventors with patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the Fellow status is nationally recognized as the highest professional distinction awarded to inventors.
Sujan is an expert in vehicle mobility systems and holds more than 250 national and international patents across a wide array of domains, including vehicle ecosystems, system dynamics, diesel engines, advanced powertrains, electrification, automation and controls. With more than two decades of experience, Sujan has dedicated his career to the development and commercialization of cutting-edge powertrain and vehicle systems technologies. His expertise spans advanced vehicle powertrains, energy efficiency, automation, electromechanical controls, systems integration and architectures, and electrification technologies, positioning him at the forefront of innovation in resilient and efficient mobility solutions.
At ORNL, Sujan's research has centered on creating innovative solutions to increase efficiency and reduce emissions in commercial vehicles and energy systems. Before joining ORNL in 2021, he spent 18 years in leadership roles at Cummins Inc., where he spearheaded advanced technology initiatives for the New Power Business Unit. His work supported on- and off-highway applications, focusing on hydrogen and electrification systems, including batteries, motor generators, power electronics and fuel cell technologies. Earlier in his career, he served as a postdoctoral researcher with NASA, where he contributed to the development of advanced controls for planetary robotic systems.
Sujan has more than 80 internationally published papers and is the recipient of the Cummins Julius Peer Innovation Award for excellence. He earned bachelor's degrees in physics and mathematics and mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. Sujan earned his master's and doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
UT-Battelle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy's Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. The Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, please visit energy.gov/science.
