UW to Host C.J. Box Symposium Oct. 18

Wyoming author C.J. Box has entertained readers worldwide with tales of fictional Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett's entanglements with predatory and other animals, nefarious humans and legal conundrums across the state's wide-open landscapes.

Many of those legal issues are the focus of an upcoming symposium hosted by the University of Wyoming College of Law's Wyoming Law Review.

The C.J. Box Symposium, featuring the New York Times-bestselling author and numerous other professionals and scholars, is scheduled from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at UW's Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. Tickets are free to the public and are available here.

"This is a great opportunity to engage with fellow fans and legal enthusiasts as we delve into the intricate legal landscapes crafted by C.J. Box," says Ethan Drewes, the Wyoming Law Review's editor-in-chief. "It will be a day of learning, networking and fun."

College of Law Dean Julie Hill will make introductory remarks at 8:10 a.m., followed by a series of 45-minute sessions.

Topics include the Endangered Species Act; corner crossing; the so-called "Zone of Death," a 50-square-mile area in the Idaho portion of Yellowstone National Park where, due to overlapping jurisdictions, a criminal could theoretically avoid prosecution for major crimes, including murder; the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency that the Clean Water Act covers only wetlands and permanent bodies of water with a "continuous surface connection" to "traditional interstate navigable waters"; and falconry, including a special presentation from a master falconer and six members of his team of falcons.

A panel discussion on "The Real Joe Pickett" is scheduled at 12:45 p.m., featuring current and former leaders of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Box himself will be in attendance most of the day and will close the symposium with a keynote presentation at 4 p.m., where he'll discuss the legal themes woven throughout his novels and how his background, research and Wyoming roots shape his storytelling. A book signing will follow at 5:15 p.m.
