ABA Applauds FCC Vote to Strengthen Oversight of Upstream Call Providers

"We applaud today's FCC vote, which strengthens requirements for voice service providers to help keep illegal and fraudulent calls off their networks. Bank impersonation scams and other illegally spoofed calls continue to reach consumers because of gaps that exist not only at call origination, but also throughout the call pathway. By advancing stronger 'know your upstream provider' requirements and reinforcing call authentication standards under the STIR/SHAKEN framework, the FCC is taking important steps to ensure providers verify who they are working with and who is using a phone number before assigning higher-level attestations. Requiring diligence from every provider in the call path helps stop fraud before it starts."
