(Washington D.C.) - The long commute, traffic jams and the shear inconvenience of having to drive to Hagåtña rather than walk to the post office in their backyard will soon be a thing of the past for Hågat residents.
The Government Relations department of the United States Postal Service has informed Congressman James Moylan's office of the approval to construct a permanent post office in Hågat.
The Hågat Post Office, which was located at 1 San Vicente St, has been closed since June 2022, due to severe safety concerns, including mold, structural damage, and a leaking roof; affecting customers with post office boxes who have had to retrieve their mail over the counter at the Hagåtña Post Office.
According to Andrew P. Jones from USPS Government Relations, "I received the following update from our Facilities Dept today: We are moving forward with this project. We have secured the ground lease and are moving forward with the design."
Congressman Moylan said the news is welcome and long overdue. "Hågat residents asked me to look into this matter after the temporary closure was put in place over three years ago and my office intervened. We inquired and then steadily pushed for the reopening of the Hågat post office and now it's about to come to fruition," Congressman Moylan said.
For Hågat residents, the update signals meaningful progress toward restoring an essential service in the village. "As a united community of Hågat, we are confident that the long awaited resolution of the post office situation will be achieved in the coming months," said Hågat Mayor Kevin Susuico.
The proposed site for the new Hågat Post Office is said to be the Old Fire Station in Hågat. The public will be informed once additional details and a timeline is provided by the USPS.
