Introducing Reel Meals: Turning Recipes into Real Connections
At American Campus Communities, we believe the resident experience goes beyond where students live. It's about how they connect, grow and build confidence in everyday life.
Recent insights show that many students are looking for more opportunities to connect and build everyday life skills outside the classroom, reinforcing the importance of experiences like Reel Meals. That's what inspired the launch of Reel Meals, a new Resident Life pilot designed to bring students together through something simple and meaningful: cooking.
Reel Meals is a social-first cooking series where students learn how to turn quick, affordable recipes into meals they can make on their own.
But more importantly, it's about what happens beyond the recipe!
During each event, residents gather in a shared space and work side by side to recreate a featured dish using pre-assembled ingredient kits. Guided by a short-form video and peer support, students build confidence in the kitchen while learning from one another. These moments create something bigger than the meal itself. They create connections.
Students share tips, encourage each other and move through the process together. What might start as a simple activity becomes a shared experience that helps build comfort and community. With take-home recipe cards and access to video content, the experience continues after the event.
From prepping ingredients to cooking and sharing the final product, the experience reinforced an important idea: small, practical skills can make a meaningful difference in day-to-day life.
As part of the pilot, residents recently made a Sweet Chili Chicken or Tofu Rice Bowl to introduce basic cooking techniques. Reel Meals reflects ACC's broader focus on supporting the whole student, empowering them to feel more capable, more connected and more at home in their community.
As we continue to test and grow this concept, we're excited about the role Reel Meals can play in creating welcoming spaces where students learn, connect and build confidence together.
