January 5, 2025 | From New Orleans Fire Department
On Sunday, January 5, 2025, the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to two reported partial building collapses. The first involved a two-story commercial building being renovated at 823 Decatur St. Dispatched at 12:11 p.m., firefighters arrived at the scene at 12:16 a.m. According to construction contractors at the scene, a trash chute being used by contractors separated from the building causing portions of the second-floor balcony and attached railing to fall onto the sidewalk and street below. The 800 block of Decatur St. will be temporarily closed until all structural mitigation has been completed and the area is deemed safe for pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
The second partial collapse involved a single-story, wood-framed dwelling at 2019 Frenchman St. NOFD personnel were dispatched to this incident at 1:12 p.m., after receiving the call of a partial collapse with possible persons trapped. The right exterior wall of this dilapidated dwelling separated from the structure and fell onto an occupied double at 2011-13 Frenchman St. According to neighbors, although being occupied by three adults and one dog, the home at 2019 Frenchman St. had been in a state of disrepair since hurricane Katrina. Only the dog was inside at the time of collapse and was safely removed. The Department of Code Enforcement has been called to the scene to determine further mitigation. There were no injuries reported at either incident.
