Congressman Aderholt Announces $295,000 ARC Grant for Water Main Replacement in Mentone

Mentone, AL -Congressman Robert Aderholt announced today that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has approved a $295,000 grant to the Water Works Board of the City of Fort Payne to replace a critical water main in the Town of Mentone, Alabama. This project will replace 2,300 linear feet of an 80-year-old 4-inch water main with a new 10-inch main, significantly improving water service for 25 businesses and 368 households in the area.

"This grant represents an important investment in Mentone's infrastructure and future growth," said Congressman Aderholt. "The current water system has served the community for nearly a century, and it is time to modernize and expand capacity to meet the needs of residents and businesses alike. This project is essential for ensuring safe, reliable water service and supporting the town's tourism-driven economy."

The Water Works Board of Fort Payne owns and operates Mentone's water infrastructure and is responsible for supplying water to the town. The larger water main will be installed under Alabama Highway 117 at the top of Lookout Mountain, connecting to existing water storage facilities serving Mentone. This upgrade will enhance water volume and supply, addressing current service limitations that cause pressure drops and unsafe water conditions, particularly during peak tourist seasons.

Mentone, with a population of 322, is one of Alabama's premier tourist destinations, known for its picturesque location on the western brow of Lookout Mountain. The town's lodges, campgrounds, and cabins attract visitors throughout the year, bolstering the local economy through retail, dining, and recreational activities. However, the influx of visitors places additional strain on the water system. This project is a crucial step in supporting Mentone's growing tourism sector and the needs of local residents and businesses.

In addition to the $295,000 in ARC funding, local sources will provide matching funds of $295,000, bringing the total project investment to $590,000.

The Appalachian Regional Commission is a regional economic development agency that partners with federal, state, and local governments. It is funded by Congress to support projects that stimulate growth and address the needs of Appalachian communities.

Construction on the water main replacement project is expected to begin in the coming months.
