The Ministry of National Defence welcomes the first payment made by the European Commission to Romania on 26 August, under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, amounting to EUR 2.5 billion. This represents 15% of the total EUR 16.68 billion allocated to Romania under the defence instrument.
The pre-financing marks a new stage in the implementation of Romania's projects under SAFE. At the MoND level, the relevant procurement programmes are progressing according to the agreed schedules. In August and September, the Ministry is making payments of approximately EUR 800 million for the contracted military equipment and for the development of production capacities in Romania.
These payments cover, among other items, radars, helicopters, ammunition, patrol vessels, infantry fighting vehicles, counter-UAS systems and air defence systems.
The implementation of these programmes will help accelerate the modernization of the Romanian Armed Forces and the development of advanced defence capabilities, while strengthening the capacity of Romania's defence industry to manufacture and integrate military equipment domestically.
