City of Stamford to Launch Automated Speed Enforcement Program

CITY OF STAMFORD TO LAUNCH AUTOMATED SPEED ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM
STAMFORD, CT - This week, Mayor Caroline Simmons announced that the City of Stamford will launch its Automated Speed Enforcement Program at 14 locations in seven school zones across the city. The speed cameras will become operational in September, and this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety and advance the goals of Stamford's Vision Zero Program.
Automated speed camera enforcement has proven to be effective in reducing driver speed and speed-related crashes. In April 2024, the Stamford Board of Representatives passed the enabling ordinance permitting only speed safety cameras and they approved the camera locations in June 2024. All plans were subsequently approved by the Connecticut Department of Transportation Office of the State Traffic Administration in January 2026.
"Speeding is one of the most significant factors contributing to serious crashes, and this program is an important tool to encourage safer driving behavior, especially around our schools," said Mayor Caroline Simmons. "Through our Vision Zero Program, we remain committed to using education, enforcement, and infrastructure improvements to make Stamford's streets safer for everyone."
Vehicle owners will be ticketed for exceeding the posted speed limit by 11 MPH or more. The program will begin with a 45-day warning period, during which drivers who exceed the enforcement threshold will receive a warning rather than a fine. Following the warning period, violations will result in a $50 fine for a first offense and $75 for subsequent offenses, and all violations carry a $15 processing fee. Speed camera enforcement fines are a civil penalty and will not be assessed against an owner's driver's license or insurance.
Speed cameras will be located on streets around the following schools: Cloonan Middle School, Springdale Elementary School, Dolan Middle School and Toquam Elementary School, Stamford High School, Julia A. Stark Elementary School, K.T. Murphy Elementary School, and Strawberry Hill School.
