Reed Pays Tribute to Dolly Parton

PROVIDENCE, RI -- Today, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) paid tribute to the life and legacy of American music legend Dolly Parton, who, in addition to her career as an entertainer and entrepreneur, was a noted philanthropist, humanitarian, and a champion of literacy and public libraries:

"Dolly Parton will forever be the big-hearted Queen of country music. She truly made the world a better place, sharing her talent and warmth with countless people.

"On stage and screen, Dolly Parton entertained and inspired generations of Americans. She uplifted people and communities through her philanthropic efforts and by serving as a model for kindness, hard work, and bringing people together. She helped kids in Rhode Island and other states through her Imagination Library, which gives free books to families in need.

"Her legacy as an artist is matched only by her legacy for good deeds, caring for others, and bringing out the best in people. She was proud of her humble beginnings and always remained grounded while stressing the importance of education and opportunity for all. She was a great American and her legacy lives on."

According to Dolly Parton's web site: "When I started the Imagination Library, it was to honor my Daddy. My Daddy was so smart but he felt crippled with the fact that he couldn't read and write."

While Parton's father, Robert Lee Parton, never had a chance to go to school because he had to help his parents make a living for the family, he joined his daughter in launching the program to help others develop a love of reading.
