State Representative Melanie Miller (R-Ashland) today voted in support of House Bill 646, legislation establishing the Ohio Data Center Study Commission.
The legislation comes in response to the rapid growth of data centers across Ohio and the many questions surrounding their development. Key concerns include the use of agricultural land, noise pollution, water use and disposal, energy demand, national security, and other potential impacts on local communities. According to some estimates, roughly 200 data centers are currently operating in Ohio, with additional facilities proposed.
"As data center development continues to expand across our state, it is important that we take a thoughtful and proactive approach," said Rep. Miller. "This commission will create a space for local communities, industry experts, utilities, and policymakers to collaborate so we can better understand the impacts and develop a responsible path forward for Ohio."
House Bill 646 would do the following:
If enacted, the commission's first meeting must occur within 45 days after the bill's effective date.
House Bill 646 now heads to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
