Martin County man faces insurance fraud, forgery charges

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of James Daryl Williams, 34, of 19805 N.C. 903, Robersonville. Williams was charged with insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense, forgery and uttering, all felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Williams of filing a false insurance claim with Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Co.

According to arrest warrants, Williams submitted fraudulent, forged receipts for items he claimed had been stolen. The items included in the claim were valued at $85,949.91, although he would have only received $4,907.33 due to policy limits.

Williams was arrested on Feb. 27 and released under a $2,000 unsecured bond.

Commissioner Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud. "Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," Commissioner Causey said. "It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums."
