NYS Tax Department Offers Free Filing Help in the Mohawk Valley Region for Eligible Taxpayers

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today encouraged eligible New Yorkers to take advantage of its free Taxpayer Assistance Program. During a scheduled in-person appointment, Tax Department representatives will guide taxpayers through free tax preparation software step-by-step as they complete and file their own tax return.

Taxpayers with federal adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, and investment income of $11,950 or less, qualify for in-person or virtual assistance through the Taxpayer Assistance Program.

In the Mohawk Valley region, sessions are available at:

  • Amsterdam Free Library, Monday, April 6, from 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • The Community Library - Cobleskill, Thursday, March 26 and April 9, from 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Schenectady County Public Library, Thursday, March 26, April 2 and 9, from 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Schoharie Free Library, Tuesday, March 31, from 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Utica Public Library, Thursday, March 26, April 2 and 9, from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

To participate in the Taxpayer Assistance Program, taxpayers must have:

  • an active e-mail account and basic computer skills,
  • information to verify identity,
  • all income tax documents to support income, credits, and deductions,
  • a copy of your 2024 tax return (if you filed).

File for Free

Taxpayers who are not eligible to participate in the Taxpayer Assistance Program may be eligible to file their personal income tax returns for free with Free File or other free e-filing options. Additional free filing resources for qualifying taxpayers are available through GetYourRefund. Taxpayers should review eligibility requirements for each software provider to see what free filing option is right for them.
