UNM's Maxwell Museum hosts this year's Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-Spirit individuals (MMIWG2S) Awareness Day event, which is observed May 5.
The event is from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology's courtyard. A Remembrance Ceremony will begin at noon to honor those who are missing or murdered, those identified and those waiting to return home. This event is followed by the MMIWG2S National Week of Action, May 5-9.
The organizers, Ashley Burch, collections manager of human osteology and laboratory supervisor, and Ash Boydston-Schmidt, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act coordinator, have organized a day-long event, which is free and open to the public. They will offer drinks, snacks, and giveaways.
Information on the MMIWG2S crisis in New Mexico and resources for families of the missing will be shared throughout the day.
Attendees will be able to speak with detectives from the APD Cold Case Unit, hear about the OMI Missing and Unidentified Human Remains Program grant and its successes, review open forensic cases, donate a family reference sample, or learn more about the New Mexico DNA Identification System.
Registration for the event is not required but appreciated for preparation purposes. For more information, email Burch at [email protected] or Boydston-Schmidt at [email protected].
