Crawford Receives Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Philip Crawford, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), has been honored with the Governor's Award for Excellence in Education. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding faculty members across Missouri for their commitment to student learning and academic excellence.

"I was very honored to be nominated for and receive this award, especially considering that Southeast has many excellent faculty deserving of being recognized in this way," said Crawford.

Dr. Crawford has dedicated 33 years to teaching at SEMO, with over 20 years serving as department chair. He is renowned for his ability to challenge students while fostering their success, earning a reputation as a caring and conscientious educator. His mentorship extends beyond the classroom, with students frequently co-authoring his more than 14 peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, he has collaborated with 11 faculty colleagues on research, presentations, and grants, demonstrating his commitment to academic collaboration.

"Dr. Crawford's passion for teaching and mentorship has had a profound impact on our students," said SEMO President Dr. Carlos Vargas. "His dedication to student success and his leadership within the department exemplify the highest standards of excellence in education. We are proud to see him recognized with this well-deserved honor."

Beyond his academic contributions, Dr. Crawford is actively involved in the community, volunteering with organizations such as the American Chemical Society and the Boy Scouts of America. His dedication to both his campus and professional communities has left a lasting impact on his field and SEMO.

"I have had a long and productive career at SEMO," he said. "Through the years, I have worked with many wonderful faculty colleagues who helped me learn and grow professionally in so many ways, and I have had the privilege of teaching a large number of excellent students in my chemistry classes and in my research lab. I love teaching at SEMO and enjoy helping students develop and grow as scholars and critical thinkers, as well as gain the skills and knowledge they need to pursue their own career goals. This award certainly encourages me to continue what I am doing professionally and, in fact, to continue to grow professionally both in and out of the classroom."

Dr. Crawford holds a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Marquette University, a Master of Science in organic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the University of Indianapolis.

The Governor's Award for Excellence in Education is presented annually to faculty members from each of Missouri's four-year institutions. Dr. Crawford was selected for his unwavering commitment to student success, leadership in academia and contributions to the field of chemistry.
