Siena supplied the tickets courtesy of the NCAA, but it was up to fans to make their own way to South Carolina for the March 19 NCAA Tournament First Round game against the Duke Blue Devils.
A quartet of seniors - John Kelleher '26, Andrew Sauer, '26 Nick Bryant '26, and Ben Antoniuk '26 - decided to make some once-in-a-lifetime memories by road tripping down to Greenville to catch the basketball game, their last one as undergrads.
Fueled by $3.73-a-gallon gasoline (the car) and plenty of energy drinks (the guys) they departed from the Siena campus in Bryant's Honda around dinnertime the day before the game, and drove straight through the night to their destination.
They were able to grab a few hours of sleep at a local motel before heading to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena for the 2:50PM tip-off.
"It was really an unforgettable experience that we will all be talking about for our entire lives. While the team fell short in the end, the journey as a whole will never be regretted," said Antoniuk. "We made so many great memories together even while just on the road. My personal favorite part was the game itself and the incredible energy that was in that arena. But sitting in traffic held its own magical moments as well."
Spectrum News interviewed the foursome about their experience.
Kelleher, who rallied the troops to make the trip, said it was a great experience for all of them.
"We were proud to represent Siena in South Carolina, and even though 13 hours in the car together may have damaged our friendship, it is something we will remember for the rest of our lives."
