Upper Bucks Bridge Dedicated for Soldier Killed in Vietnam War

The County of Bucks on Tuesday dedicated Bucks County Bridge #252 in Milford Township in memory of U.S. Army Cpl. Larry Lee York, a Bucks County native who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.

York, 20, was part of a unit supporting Operation Burlington Trail when on June 1, 1968, his unit came under attack during a night patrol. York was killed in a mortar attack that killed two other soldiers and wounded 23.

A year before his death, York was drafted into the Army. He was sent to Vietnam in November 1967.

"It is our young men and women we send off to war," said Commissioner Chair Bob Harvie. "We should as a nation be very, very careful when we do that. We have to make sure that any sacrifice we ask of them is truly worth the sacrifice they're willing to give - because they will make that sacrifice if we ask them."

Before serving in the military, York attended Quakertown Community High School and was a member of Trumbauersville United Church of Christ. He was fond of hunting, fishing and trapping.

York left behind his mother, two brothers, two sisters and a fiancée. Some surviving family members and their children attended Tuesday's ceremony.

The bridge dedicated in York's honor crosses Unami Creek along Milford Square Pike in Milford Township. It is the eighteenth County-owned bridge since 2022 to be named for a local soldier lost in the Vietnam War.

The dedications are part of the County's Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge Program, which honors the 136 Bucks County residents lost in the Vietnam War. The County administers the program in partnership with Bucks County-based veterans' advocate Ed Preston, who chairs the Pennsylvania Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (PAVVMF).
