Republic of Korea supports WFP response to food insecurity in Syria

DAMASCUS - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a contribution of 2,400 metric tons of rice from the Republic of Korea, helping strengthen support to vulnerable families across Syria and reach approximately 1.2 million people for one month. The rice has arrived at WFP warehouses, and distribution is already under way to ensure assistance reaches families most in need.

"The Republic of Korea's continued support is vital in helping WFP sustain its assistance to those most in need across Syria," said Marianne Ward, WFP Country Director and Representative in Syria. "Reliable contributions such as these allow us to plan effectively and respond in a timely manner."

The ROK is a longstanding partner of WFP in Syria, providing regular in-kind rice contributions that help sustain food assistance operations and ensure continued support to vulnerable families. Building on this commitment, The ROK scaled up assistance in 2025 with its largest-ever contribution to WFP's Syria response-USD 10 million. This funding enabled WFP to support 94,500 people through six months of cash-based assistance. Each family received USD 65 per month, redeemable through WFP's 300 contracted retailers across 12 governorates, allowing them to meet their food needs with dignity, choice, and stability.

"This contribution underscores our steadfast commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in Syria, where millions continue to face acute challenges amid ongoing instability. The Republic of Korea remains dedicated to partnering with WFP and other international organizations to alleviate suffering, promote food security, and foster resilience." said H.E. Gyusuk Geon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Syria.

As humanitarian needs remain high and resources increasingly constrained, sustained partnerships are critical to ensuring that lifesaving assistance continues to reach those who need it most.
