City Of Las Vegas Adds Additional Crossing Guards
For New School Year
Five High Schools Added To Program
The city of Las Vegas continues to make roadways safer, adding crossing guards at five additional high schools for the upcoming school year. The city will have crossing guards at Bonanza, Centennial, Desert Pines, Shadow Ridge and Western high schools beginning Aug. 10, 2026, as the new school year begins. These schools join Arbor View, Cimarron-Memorial, Clark and Palo Verde high schools with crossing guards in the city of Las Vegas.
All the elementary and middle schools in the city previously had crossing guards assigned. With the nine high schools the total number of schools in the city with crossing guards is now 92. The city spends approximately $3.59 million annually on 322 crossing guards.
The city will continue to evaluate additional high schools to determine if crossing guards will improve safety at those sites. Criteria for crossing guard placement includes:

Type of crossing

Crossing distance

Alternative crossings available

Number of crossings
-
Hourly vehicular traffic volumes

Number of conflicting turning movements

Motorist and pedestrian sight distance and visibility.
The addition of crossing guards is part of the Vision Zero initiative that aims to develop strategies to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries on city of Las Vegas roadways by 2050. The city's program has officially been recognized by the national Vision Zero Network as one of 69 cities across the country working to make roadways safer.
Vision Zero is a collaborative effort, and the city of Las Vegas has already held several meetings with local stakeholders, including law enforcement, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, community safety groups, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
