Plains, Ga. - Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, will be laid to rest on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, at the Carter home and garden, part of Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, in Plains, Georgia. He will be buried next to his wife of 77 years, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
On Jan. 9, following a funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church, the president's casket will travel to the Carter home and garden, where interment will take place. Starting at approximately 4:45 p.m., the funeral procession will travel via Buena Vista Road, N. Bond Street and U.S. Route 280. The public is invited to view the procession; however, the funeral service and interment ceremony will be closed to public viewing.
Road closures will be enforced by Georgia State Patrol before and during the funeral procession as it travels through town, potentially impacting visitors attending the event. Highway 280 will be closed to all traffic from 3 p.m. through 7 p.m., from Rabbit Branch Road west of Plains to Bob Dodson Road east of Plains. Bond Street/Highway 45 will be closed from Highway 280 north to Jack Slappy Road during the same time period. Detour routes will be marked with signage and law enforcement. Visitors wishing to view the funeral processions will be able to park in designated areas on Hospital Street in Plains. All closure times are approximate and the times and roads to be closed are subject to change.
