Some intersections in eastern Ohio to be converted to all-way stops

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio - The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is improving safety at select intersections statewide by converting standard, two-way stop intersections to all-way stop following examples in other states where the change brought improved safety.

Since 2018, the state of North Carolina converted over 500 intersections from a typical two-way to all-way stop control. Their analysis of 348 of these locations showed a 100% reduction in fatal crashes and 95% reduction in serious injury crashes. Similar results were also seen in the state of Delaware.

In Ohio, 77 intersections statewide were evaluated and chosen for conversion to an all-way stop. Implementation will occur within the next two years.

In eastern Ohio, five locations were identified for conversion.

Planned all-way stop conversions in Eastern Ohio:

  • May 18 | Columbiana County: State Route 558/State Route 164 located southeast of Leetonia
  • June 1 | Holmes County: State Route 515/County Road 168 located three miles north of Walnut Creek
  • June 15 | Carroll County: State Route 171/Avalon Road located 3.5 miles west of State Route 43

All-way stop conversions completed in Eastern Ohio:

  • 2024 | Tuscarawas County: State Route 93 and State Route 516 intersection in Dundee
  • 2025 | Harrison County: State Route 151 and State Route 212 intersection in Bowerston

Signs to alert drivers of the changes will be placed approximately two weeks prior and will remain on site for approximately 30 days after the change to remind motorists of the new traffic pattern. All approaches of the intersections will be equipped with dual Stop Ahead warning signs.

ODOT will continue to monitor the intersections to ensure the all-way stop is operating as intended.
