Nordic defence ministers signed a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDECO) on 6 May 2025.
This is the first revision of the NORDEFCO MoU since Finland and Sweden joined NATO. The revised MoU was signed in connection with a meeting of Nordic defence ministers hosted by Finnish Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen in Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland.
"We are strengthening Nordic defence with a renewed NORDEFCO founding document. The agreement lays the foundation for a rapid strengthening of common defence and military security of supply. Nordic defence cooperation is entering a new era, where we respond to the changed security situation as part of NATO's deterrence and defence. We will also deepen our cooperation to strengthen the EU and continue our unwavering support for Ukraine", Minister Häkkänen said.
The revised Memorandum of Understanding specifies the purpose, objectives, structures and main principles of the cooperation. The NATO membership of Finland and Sweden, in particular, have changed the nature of Nordic defence cooperation and its political premises.
