Celebrate Wildfire Awareness Month by Working On Preparedness, Prevention

May 2 is also National Community Wildfire Preparedness Day

OLYMPIA - This May, Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) would like to remind Washingtonians that the best way to celebrate spring is to spend a little time brushing up on home preparedness and wildfire prevention.

May is National Wildfire Awareness Month, dedicated to educating more people about the dangers of wildfire - and the simple steps we all can take to make homes more resilient to it. It coincides with National Community Wildfire Preparedness Day, which is on May 2.

"No one is immune from the impacts of wildfire," Commissioner Upthegrove said. "But rolling up our sleeves and taking even basic measures like providing defensible space - clearing needles and dry leaves from your roof, moving firewood 30 feet away from structures, or clearing out intrusive undergrowth - can help protect our homes."

Residents interested in learning more about home preparedness and wildfire prevention can visit the DNR website at dnr.wa.gov/wildfire-prevention to learn more, or dnr.wa.gov/wildfire-resources/community-wildfire-resilience-and-preparedness for additional resources.

"Wherever you live in Washington, Wildfire Awareness Month is a great time to do your part to be prepared for wildfire season. We can all play a role in making every summer a little safer in the Evergreen State. We can all be one less spark," Commissioner Upthegrove said.
