KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Mayor Quinton Lucas today announced the permanent appointment of Marc Shaw as City Auditor for Kansas City, following his service as interim City Auditor since February 2025. The mayor's recommendation was approved by a unanimous vote of City Council during yesterday's meeting.
During his time in the interim role, Auditor Shaw demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to fiscal accountability that made him the clear choice for the permanent position.
Shaw brings over two decades of experience as a senior U.S. diplomat leading complex international operations across six presidential administrations. A Kansas City native, he returned home after serving in Washington, D.C., and overseas in several roles with significant management and compliance responsibilities, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, where he led efforts on global arms control treaty compliance, worked with allies to eliminate the international use of biological and chemical weapons, and addressed emerging security challenges. He has worked for three Secretaries of State, served as Director of a $1.35 billion narcotics and law enforcement program, overseen policy implementation and compliance work for a $1.2 billion security assistance program, and ensured compliance with government spending directives and applicable laws and regulations while overseas.
"Marc has proven himself during his time as interim City Auditor, and I am pleased to make his appointment permanent," said Mayor Lucas. "His extensive background in managing complex international operations and investigations and his proven ability to find cost-savings for taxpayers and improve operational efficiencies in complicated bureaucracies makes him an ideal City Auditor. We are proud to have his service to his country continue in our hometown."
Shaw is delighted to continue contributing to Kansas City's growth and development.
"I am honored to continue serving as City Auditor of Kansas City," said City Auditor Shaw. "This past year has reinforced my commitment to ensuring the city's fiscal accountability and efficient use of resources, and I look forward to building on that work."
